Top 5 smartphones for Entertainment

Written by Vincent Rays. Posted under Mobile Phones on November 2nd, 2011

It’s official – phones are now fun! Long gone are the days when the phone was a device tethered to the wall – phones first went portable and have now become smart. The smartphone was originally seen as an office tool, something for work and not play, but even as they were shrinking in size they became increasingly powerful until now they pack the processing power to deliver music, video, and applications, including games.

A phone is now no longer just a device for communicating with your friends but a portable computer that can entertain you anywhere you are – a concert hall in your palm, a movie theatre in your pocket . A public hungry for phone-fun have an increasing number of models to choose from. But which of them deliver the most satisfying package of diversion and delight – in short, which models give you more ‘singing and dancing’ for your money?

What makes an entertaining smart phone?
When you consider a phone as a mobile entertainment centre, certain features will be paramount. For watching movies and video clips a large, bright screen is a must. A fast and stable internet connection is essential for downloading apps, streaming music and video and for keeping up to date on your social media networks. The best smartphones for entertainment must run an OS that has a good variety of applications available and good quality audio, ease of use, a good battery life and all supported by a powerful processor.

A top five list of Entertaining Smartphones
With these criteria in mind some of the most entertaining smartphones around would include:

Samsung Galaxy S II – the latest model from Samsung, following in the footsteps of one of the most successful smartphones to date (the popular Galaxy S). With a 4.3 inch screen and running the Android system it is slim and sexy and is not over-complicated to use. Galaxy S2 deals provide the basics, well delivered.

LG Optimus 2X (LG-P990) – another LG classic and is the world’s first dual-processor Android phone. It runs the Android system and has a bright 480×800 pixel 4 inch screen. It is chunkier than the Samsung and has good built in cameras for movies and stills.

Nokia X7 (X7-00) – another 4 inch screen but with a lower resolution than either the Samsung or LG above this phone is not quite in the same class although it has a better quality build and feels safe and satisfying in your hand. It runs the Symbian OS, although Nokia have announced they will be moving over to the Windows platform in the future.

HTC Raider – HTC are keeping us waiting on this one – another Android phone with a 1.5GHz dual processor and 1Gb of RAM, plus a 4.5 inch screen, this offering should provide plenty of power and speed for entertainment content when it is finally released.

Motorola Defy (MB525) – this Android phone is for those of us who are either clumsy or adventurous as it is designed to withstand getting wet, getting dirty and being generally physically abused. The screen is a relatively small 3.7 inches but is sharp and bright with good colour production even in sunlight. This one could be perfect for you surf-bums and mountain climbers as it can even be fully immersed in water and still carry on providing the entertainment you demand!

And as an encore…
Your choice will, of course, all boil down to personal preference in the end so you need to get to your suppliers and hold ‘em and feel ‘em and play with the devices to choose the one that is right for you. This is all part of the fun.

I can almost feel the shocked outrage of the fans of all things Apple at the absence of the ubiquitous iPhone from this list. While delivering excellent quality video and sound it is limited by its lack of support for non-proprietary Apple file formats. If you can’t play your favourite film because it uses the DivX codec that could mean more frustration than fun. So get smart and check out the phones on the list if you intend to buy a mobile device for pleasure rather than spreadsheets and office email. If you can’t get to the fun, the fun has to come to you and a good smartphone can deliver all the diversion you need in your day. That’s entertainment!
